Umbwe Route – 6 Days

A steep, direct, and scenic route for experienced trekkers.

Overview

The Umbwe Route is the shortest and steepest route on Kilimanjaro. It ascends quickly through dense rainforest before joining the popular Machame route at Barranco Camp. This is a challenging trek recommended for fit climbers with previous hiking experience.

Detailed 6-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Umbwe Gate → Umbwe Camp

Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours | Habitat: Rainforest

Steep trail through thick jungle, roots, and mossy ridges. Overnight at Umbwe Camp.

Day 2: Umbwe Camp → Barranco Camp

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours | Habitat: Heather/Moorland

Climb up narrow ridges with dramatic views to reach Barranco Valley.

Day 3: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours

Climb the Barranco Wall — exciting but non-technical — then undulate across valleys to Karanga.

Day 4: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

A steady ascent to Barafu. Early dinner and prepare for summit night.

Day 5: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Hiking Time: 12–16 Hours | Habitat: Arctic

Midnight summit push to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After summit celebrations, descend to Barafu for rest, then to Mweka Camp.

Day 6: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Hotel

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Final descent through forest to Mweka Gate. Receive certificates and transfer to hotel.
