Rongai Route – 7 Days

A peaceful northern approach with excellent acclimatization time at Mawenzi Tarn.

Overview

The Rongai Route offers a quieter and more remote approach to Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the north near the Kenyan border, the trail gradually ascends through wilderness landscapes before crossing the high-altitude saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. This 7-day itinerary includes an important acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn, improving summit success and comfort.

Detailed 7-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate → Simba Camp

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours | Habitat: Forest

Drive to the Rongai starting point and trek through forest and farmland to Simba Camp.

Day 2: Simba Camp → Kikelelwa Camp

Hiking Time: 6–7 Hours | Habitat: Moorland

Continue steadily upwards with wide views toward Mawenzi.

Day 3: Kikelelwa Camp → Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Steep but short climb to reach the stunning Mawenzi Tarn, beneath dramatic rock towers.

Day 4: Acclimatization at Mawenzi Tarn

Activity: Short acclimatization hike

Spend the day hiking around Mawenzi ridges and returning to the camp. This extra acclimatization day greatly increases summit success.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn → Kibo Hut

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Cross the alpine saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach base camp for summit night.

Day 6: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

Hiking Time: 12–16 Hours

Midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After celebrations, descend to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.

Day 7: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Hotel

Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours

Final descent through moorland and rainforest to the gate for transfer back to your hotel.
