Rongai Route – 6 Days

A quiet and scenic northern route approaching Kilimanjaro from the Kenyan border.

Overview

The Rongai Route begins on the remote northern side of Kilimanjaro, close to the Kenyan border. This route is less crowded than other approaches and offers a gentle climb through open wilderness and moorland, eventually joining the Marangu Route at Kibo Camp for the summit push.

Detailed 6-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Rongai Gate → Simba Camp

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours | Habitat: Montane Forest

Drive to Rongai Gate and trek steadily through forest and farmland to Simba Camp.

Day 2: Simba Camp → Kikelelwa Camp

Hiking Time: 6–7 Hours | Habitat: Moorland

Climb through open moorland with expanding views of Mawenzi and the saddle.

Day 3: Kikelelwa Camp → Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

Short but steep ascent to the spectacular Mawenzi Tarn, set beneath Mawenzi's rocky spires.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn → Kibo Hut

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Cross the high-altitude saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach the base camp for summit night.

Day 5: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

Hiking Time: 12–16 Hours

Midnight summit attempt. Ascend to Gilman's Point and continue to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Horombo for overnight rest.

Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Hotel

Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours

Final descent through moorland and rainforest. Celebration and certificate presentation at the gate.
