Overview

The Northern Circuit is the longest and most scenic route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers the best acclimatization profile, leading to the highest summit success rate. This route approaches from the west via Lemosho, crosses the Shira Plateau, then circles the quieter northern slopes of the mountain before joining the summit path at Kibo.

Detailed 9-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp)

Hiking: 3–4 Hours | Habitat: Rainforest

Forest trek with wildlife sightings. Overnight at Mti Mkubwa.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1 Camp

Hiking: 5–6 Hours | Habitat: Moorland

Ascend into the Shira Plateau with wide-open scenic views.

Day 3: Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp (Acclimatization Day)

Hiking: 3–4 Hours

Gentle trek with acclimatization hikes near camp.

Day 4: Shira 2 → Lava Tower → Moir Hut

Hiking: 6–7 Hours | Max Altitude: 4,630m

"Climb high, sleep low" day via Lava Tower, descend to Moir Hut.

Day 5: Moir Hut → Buffalo Camp

Hiking: 5–6 Hours

Traverse the Northern Circuit Trail with sweeping views toward Kenya.

Day 6: Buffalo Camp → Rongai Third Cave

Hiking: 5–7 Hours

Continue across the remote northern slopes with minimal crowds.

Day 7: Third Cave → School Hut (Summit Base)

Hiking: 4–5 Hours

Move into position for the summit attempt. Early rest before midnight start.

Day 8: School Hut → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Hiking: 12–16 Hours | Habitat: Arctic Summit

Midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. Descend via Barafu route to Mweka Camp.

Day 9: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Hotel

Hiking: 3–5 Hours

Walk down through rainforest to the gate for certificates and transfer to hotel.
