The Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” it offers diverse landscapes ranging from lush rainforest to high alpine desert. This route allows excellent acclimatization through the “climb high, sleep low” profile, contributing to a strong success rate.

Begin your trek through lush forest with chances of seeing monkeys and exotic birds. Overnight at Machame Camp.
Hiking Time: 4–6 Hours | Habitat: Moorland
Steady ascent through heather and moorland with stunning views across the Shira Plateau.
Hiking Time: 6–7 Hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m) for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp for overnight. “Climb high, sleep low.”
Hiking Time: 7–9 Hours
Climb the Barranco Wall — a fun scramble with incredible views — then cross alpine valleys to Barafu Camp. Early rest before summit.
Hiking Time: 13–16 Hours | Habitat: Arctic Summit
Begin the summit push at midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak for sunrise. Descend to Mweka Camp for overnight.
Hiking Time: 3–5 Hours | Habitat: Rainforest
Final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive certificates and return to hotel.
