Lemosho Route – 8 Days

A scenic and high-success route approaching Kilimanjaro from the west.

Overview

The Lemosho Route is one of the most beautiful and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the western side, it offers scenic rainforest trails, panoramic ridge views, and excellent acclimatization. This route is known for its high summit success rate and is recommended for trekkers seeking a less crowded and more immersive experience.

Detailed 7-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate → Big Tree Camp (Mti Mkubwa)

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours | Habitat: Rainforest

Registration at the park gate followed by a gentle trek through lush rainforest. Overnight at Big Tree Camp.

Day 2: Big Tree Camp → Shira 1 Camp

Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours | Habitat: Moorland

The trail becomes steeper as you ascend the Shira Plateau, offering expansive views.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp → Shira 2 Camp

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

A short acclimatization hike across the plateau. Enjoy views of the Western Breach and glacier formations.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp

Hiking Time: 6–7 Hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert

Climb high to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp for overnight. “Climb High, Sleep Low” is key to success.

Day 5: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours

Begin with the Barranco Wall ascent — a memorable scramble — followed by a traverse to Karanga.

Day 6: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours

A gradual climb to Barafu Camp. Early dinner and rest before the summit push.

Day 7: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Hiking Time: 13–16 Hours | Habitat: Arctic Summit

Midnight start to reach the summit at sunrise. Celebrate at the highest point in Africa. Descend to Mweka Camp for overnight.

Day 8: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Hotel

Hiking Time: 3–5 Hours

Walk through the rainforest to Mweka Gate for certificates and transfer to hotel.
